Nystagmus, central (DC 6016)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

Central nystagmus is a condition where your eyes make involuntary, repetitive movements (like jerking or bouncing) due to problems with your brain or brainstem rather than your inner ear. The VA rates central nystagmus at a flat 10% disability rating. This 10% rating recognizes that the constant eye movement can affect your vision, balance, and daily activities, though it's considered a relatively lower level of impairment in the VA's rating system.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you have central nystagmus, which is an involuntary back-and-forth or circular movement of your eyes that's caused by a problem in your brain or brainstem rather than your inner ear. The eye movements happen automatically and you can't control them, which can affect your vision and balance. This condition is different from other types of nystagmus because it originates from your central nervous system.
