Ptosis, unilateral or bilateral (DC 6019)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

Ptosis is when your upper eyelid droops down over your eye, either in one eye (unilateral) or both eyes (bilateral). The VA rates ptosis based on how much vision remains in your better eye or how many treatment visits you've needed for eye problems. Ratings range from 0% to 100%, with higher ratings given when your good eye also has poor vision or when you need frequent medical treatment.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Ptosis is drooping of the upper eyelid. The VA rates it under 38 CFR § 4.79 based on the visual impairment caused — if the drooping covers half or more of the pupil, the eye is rated as having visual impairment for the obscured portion.
