Lagophthalmos (DC 6022)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

Lagophthalmos is when you can't fully close one or both of your eyelids - there's always a gap that stays open even when you try to shut your eyes completely. This happens due to nerve damage, muscle weakness, or scarring that affects the muscles controlling your eyelids. The VA rates this condition at 10% for one eye (unilateral) or 20% for both eyes (bilateral), recognizing that having eyelids that won't close properly puts your eyes at constant risk of drying out, getting infected, or being injured.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You qualify for this rating when you have lagophthalmos (inability to fully close your eyelids) affecting both eyes. The condition must be present in both the right and left eye to meet this criteria, not just one eye.
  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if lagophthalmos (inability to fully close your eyelid) affects only one eye. The condition must prevent you from completely closing the eyelid on either your right or left side, but not both eyes.
