Aphakia or dislocation of crystalline lens (DC 6029)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

Aphakia means the natural lens of the eye is missing (usually because it was surgically removed for cataract treatment without an artificial replacement lens). Dislocation of the crystalline lens means the natural lens has moved out of its normal position. The VA rates this condition under DC 6029 with two rules. First, a 30% floor applies whether one eye or both eyes are affected, regardless of how well you see with glasses or contacts. Second, when visual impairment is higher, the VA rates the visual impairment under the standard vision-loss codes (acuity, field, or muscle function) and then elevates the result ONE step up the rating ladder, so the rating is one tier higher than what visual impairment alone would yield. The higher of the 30% floor or the elevated visual-impairment rating is what the VA assigns.

Rating levels

  • 30% — You qualify for at least 30% under DC 6029 if you have aphakia (the natural lens of one or both eyes is missing, typically after cataract surgery without a replacement lens) or dislocation of the crystalline lens (the natural lens has moved out of its normal position). This 30% is a floor whether one eye or both eyes are affected. Above this floor, the VA rates your visual impairment under the standard vision-loss codes (visual acuity 6066-6081, visual field 6080, or eye-muscle function 6090), and then elevates that level ONE STEP up the rating ladder. Example: if your visual acuity alone would warrant 20%, the elevate-one-step rule moves it to 30%; if it would warrant 30%, it moves to 40%, and so on. Always whichever yields the higher result.
