Scotoma, unilateral (DC 6081)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

A scotoma is basically a blind spot or area of reduced vision in one eye where you can't see clearly or at all. The VA rates unilateral scotoma (affecting just one eye) at a minimum of 10% if the blind spot covers at least one-quarter of your visual field or if it's located in the central part of your vision, regardless of size. This rating recognizes that even a smaller central blind spot can significantly impact your daily activities like reading or driving.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you have a blind spot (scotoma) in one eye that blocks out at least one-quarter of what you can normally see in that eye, OR if you have a blind spot located in the center of your vision regardless of how big or small it is. The blind spot must significantly interfere with your ability to see clearly in that portion of your visual field.
