Diplopia (DC 6090)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

Diplopia means you see two images of a single object - essentially double vision. The VA rates this condition based on how far your eyes are misaligned when looking in different directions, measured in degrees. The rating scale considers whether the double vision occurs in your central vision (straight ahead) or when looking up, down, or to the side, with more severe misalignment in central vision receiving higher ratings.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Diplopia (double vision) occurs when the eyes do not align properly and produce two images. The VA rates it under DC 6090 based on the direction and degree of double vision — looking straight ahead, looking up, looking down, or to either side. The rating is converted into an equivalent visual acuity in the worse-affected eye, under 38 CFR § 4.79.
