Gastritis, chronic (DC 7307)

Body system: Digestive SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.114

Chronic gastritis is long-term inflammation of the stomach lining, often caused by H. pylori infection, NSAIDs, autoimmune disease, or chronic alcohol use. The VA does not maintain a separate rating ladder for gastritis. Instead, 38 CFR § 4.114 directs raters to evaluate this condition using the criteria for peptic ulcer disease (DC 7304), based on symptom severity, frequency of episodes, and any post-operative or bleeding complications.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Chronic gastritis is rated using the same criteria as peptic ulcer disease (DC 7304). The VA looks at the same factors — post-operative recovery, abdominal pain, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding (hematemesis or melena), anemia, and how often symptoms appear over the year. Read the DC 7304 rating tiles for the full 0% to 100% ladder.
