Benign neoplasms of the breast and other injuries of the breast (DC 7631)

Body system: Gynecological ConditionsRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.116

DC 7631 covers benign neoplasms of the breast (fibroadenoma, intraductal papilloma, phyllodes tumor benign-grade, lipoma, fibrocystic changes when symptomatic) and other non-malignant injuries of the breast (post-traumatic deformity, infection / abscess residuals, post-biopsy scarring, post-surgical changes). The VA does not assign a schedular rating directly under DC 7631 — instead, chronic residuals are rated under their own diagnostic codes: surgical and post-traumatic scars (DCs 7800-7805), lymphedema (DC 7121), limited motion of arm (DC 5201), shoulder (DCs 5200/5202/5203), and wrist (DC 5215), loss of grip strength, sensory loss in the chest wall or upper extremity, donor-site residuals from muscle harvesting for reconstruction, and/or DC 7626 (mastectomy / wide local excision with alteration of size or form). Multiple residuals are combined under 38 CFR § 4.25. Unlike DC 7630 (breast malignancy), there is no 100% convalescent rating and no six-month mandatory exam.

Rating levels

  • -1% — DC 7631 has no schedular tier of its own. Rate chronic residuals separately under the diagnostic codes that match each functional loss: surgical scars (DCs 7800-7805), lymphedema of the arm (DC 7121), limitation of motion of arm (DC 5201), shoulder (DCs 5200/5202/5203), and wrist (DC 5215), loss of grip strength, sensory loss in the chest wall or upper extremity (DC 8519 intercostobrachial; DCs 8513/8514 for ulnar/median/radial as applicable), donor-site residuals from reconstructive muscle harvesting (DC 5301 latissimus dorsi group I, DC 5319 abdominal muscle group XIX), AND/OR DC 7626 if there has been alteration of size or form of the breast. If multiple residuals apply, each is rated under its own DC and combined under 38 CFR § 4.25 subject to anti-pyramiding rules of § 4.14.
