Condyloid process, loss of, one or both sides (DC 9908)

Body system: Dental and Oral ConditionsRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.150

The condyloid process is the rounded end of your jaw bone that connects to your skull, allowing your jaw to move up and down and side to side. If you've lost part or all of this bone structure on one or both sides due to injury, surgery, or disease, the VA rates this condition at a flat 30% disability rating. This rating recognizes the significant impact on your ability to chew, speak, and open your mouth normally.

Rating levels

  • 30% — You qualify for this rating if you've lost the condyloid process (the rounded top part of your jawbone that connects to your skull at the jaw joint) on one or both sides of your face. This loss makes it difficult or impossible for your jaw to move properly, affecting your ability to chew, speak, and open your mouth normally. The rating applies whether you've lost this bone structure on just one side or both sides of your jaw.
