Neoplasm, hard and soft tissue, benign (DC 9917)

Body system: Dental and Oral ConditionsRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.150

A benign neoplasm is a non-cancerous growth in the hard tissues (like jaw bone) or soft tissues (like gums) of your mouth. The VA doesn't have specific rating percentages for this condition itself. Instead, they'll rate you based on any bone loss, tooth loss, or functional problems caused by the growth or its treatment, using the rating criteria for those specific impairments.

Rating levels

  • -1% — The VA doesn't provide a specific rating percentage for chronic bone infection, bone death, or radiation-caused bone damage in your jaw bones (maxilla is upper jaw, mandible is lower jaw). Instead, they will evaluate your condition using the general dental and oral conditions rating schedule, which means your rating will be based on how severely the bone problem affects your ability to chew, speak, or function normally.
