Hallux rigidus, unilateral, severe (DC 5281)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71aDBQ: DBQ MUSC Foot Conditions including flatfoot (pes planus)

Hallux rigidus is severe stiffness and arthritis in your big toe joint that makes it hard to bend or move your toe normally. The VA doesn't have separate rating criteria for this condition, so they'll rate it using the criteria for hallux valgus (bunions) instead. This means you can receive ratings of 10% or 20% depending on how severely the condition affects your ability to walk and function.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You have severe stiffness and limited movement in your big toe joint on one foot (hallux rigidus means "stiff big toe"). The joint has significantly reduced flexibility, making it difficult to bend your toe up and down, which can cause pain and affect your ability to walk normally or wear certain shoes.
