Pinguecula (DC 6037)

Body system: EyeRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.79

Pinguecula is a yellowish, non-cancerous raised growth on the white of the eye (conjunctiva), typically caused by long-term sun, wind, or dust exposure. Unlike most other eye conditions, DC 6037 does not rate pinguecula on visual impairment or treatment visits. Per 38 CFR § 4.79, pinguecula is evaluated ENTIRELY under DC 7800 (disfiguring scars of the head, face, or neck) based on how visibly the growth affects appearance. If the pinguecula is not visibly disfiguring, the rating is 0%.

Rating levels

  • -1% — DC 6037 pinguecula does NOT have its own rating ladder under § 4.79. The VA rates pinguecula entirely under DC 7800 (disfiguring scars of the head, face, or neck). The actual rating depends on how visible the growth is and how it affects appearance, measured by the DC 7800 criteria for characteristics of disfigurement. If the pinguecula is not visibly disfiguring, the rating is 0%. There is no visual impairment path, no Incapacitating Episodes path, and no minimum floor for pinguecula itself.
