Body system: Smell and TasteRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.87aDBQ: DBQ ENT Loss of Sense of Smell and or Taste

Complete loss of taste (called ageusia in medical terms) means you can't taste anything at all - sweet, salty, sour, or bitter flavors are all gone. The VA rates this condition at a flat 10% disability rating, recognizing that while losing your sense of taste significantly impacts your quality of life and enjoyment of food, it's considered a moderate impairment. This rating acknowledges the daily challenges you face with nutrition, food safety, and overall well-being.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You cannot taste anything at all - no sweet, sour, salty, or bitter flavors. This means you have completely lost your ability to detect any taste sensations when eating or drinking, which is different from temporary taste loss that might come with a cold or medication.
