Postgastrectomy syndrome (DC 7308)

Body system: Digestive SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.114

Postgastrectomy syndrome covers digestive problems that follow surgical removal of part or all of the stomach (gastrectomy), including dumping syndrome (rapid emptying of stomach contents), early satiety, nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, anemia, and chronic vomiting. The VA does not rate this condition under its own ladder. Instead, 38 CFR § 4.114 directs raters to evaluate the residual symptoms using the criteria for chronic complications of upper gastrointestinal surgery (DC 7303), based on vomiting frequency, weight loss, and dependence on tube feeding or total parenteral nutrition.

Rating levels

  • -1% — After stomach surgery (gastrectomy), the VA does not maintain a separate rating ladder for postgastrectomy syndrome itself. Instead, the residual symptoms — dumping syndrome, vomiting, nutritional deficiencies, tube feeding or parenteral nutrition dependence — are rated using the criteria for chronic complications of upper gastrointestinal surgery (DC 7303). Read the DC 7303 rating tiles for the full 0% to 80% ladder.
