Body system: Digestive SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.114
Stricture of the rectum and anus means the opening has become narrowed or tightened, making it difficult or painful to have bowel movements. The VA rates this condition from 10% to 100% based on how much the opening has narrowed and how severely it affects your ability to pass stool. Higher ratings go to veterans who have more significant narrowing with severe symptoms like complete inability to pass solid waste (100%) or major reduction requiring straining and causing pain (60%).
Rating levels
100% — The anus (opening where bowel movements exit the body) cannot open at all, making it completely impossible to have a normal bowel movement or pass solid waste. This represents a total blockage where no solid stool can be expelled from the body naturally.
60% — The opening of your rectum and anus is narrowed by half or more (lumen means the inner opening of a body passage). You experience pain and have to strain hard when trying to have a bowel movement because of this narrowing.
30% — Your rectum and anus have narrowed (the opening has gotten smaller) but by less than half of its normal size. Because of this narrowing, you have to strain and push hard when trying to have a bowel movement.
10% — Your rectum or anus has become narrower than normal (luminal narrowing), which may cause you to strain when having bowel movements. This condition is manageable through changes to your diet, such as eating more fiber or avoiding certain foods, without needing surgery or other medical treatments.
