Hemorrhoids, external or internal (DC 7336)

Body system: Digestive SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.114DBQ: DBQ GI Rectum & Anus

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in and around your rectum and anus that can cause pain, bleeding, and discomfort. The VA rates hemorrhoids at 10% or 20% based on how severe your symptoms are and how often you have flare-ups. A 20% rating requires either persistent bleeding that causes anemia (low blood count) or internal hemorrhoids that stay pushed out with frequent blood clots, while 10% covers less severe but still problematic cases.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You qualify at this level if you have hemorrhoids that bleed regularly and cause anemia (low red blood cell count that makes you tired and weak). You also qualify if you have internal hemorrhoids that stay pushed outside your body all the time and get blood clots (thrombosis) in them at least three times per year.
  • 10% — You can qualify for this rating if you have internal hemorrhoids that push outside your body (prolapsed) and get blood clots (thrombosis) two times or less per year. You can also qualify if you have external hemorrhoids that develop painful blood clots three or more times per year.
