Vagotomy with pyloroplasty or gastroenterostomy (DC 7348)

Body system: Digestive SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.114

This rating covers veterans who had a vagotomy (cutting nerves to the stomach) combined with either pyloroplasty (widening the stomach outlet) or gastroenterostomy (creating a new connection between stomach and intestine). The VA rates this based on ongoing complications and symptoms after surgery. Ratings range from 20% for incomplete nerve cutting up to 40% for serious complications like blockages or ongoing stomach problems that prevent normal digestion.

Rating levels

  • 40% — You qualify for 40% if, after vagotomy with pyloroplasty or gastroenterostomy, you have confirmed postoperative complications such as stricture (narrowing) or continuing gastric retention (food not emptying from the stomach normally).
  • 30% — You qualify for 30% if you have a confirmed diagnosis of alkaline gastritis with symptoms, or if you have confirmed persisting diarrhea following the surgery.
  • 20% — You qualify for 20% if the surgery resulted in an incomplete vagotomy (the vagus nerve was not fully divided as intended).
  • -1% — A recurrent ulcer after a complete vagotomy is rated under DC 7304 (peptic ulcer) with a 20% minimum. Other post-operative residuals not specifically listed here are rated under DC 7303.
