Neoplasm, hard and soft tissue, malignant (DC 9918)

Body system: Dental and Oral ConditionsRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.150DBQ: DBQ DENTAL Oral and Dental

This diagnostic code covers malignant cancerous tumors (neoplasms) affecting the hard tissues like bones and jawbones, or soft tissues like gums, tongue, and other mouth structures. The VA automatically rates all malignant cancers at 100% disability while you're receiving treatment and for six months after treatment ends. This 100% rating ensures you get full disability compensation during the most challenging period of fighting cancer.

Rating levels

  • 100% — This rating covers any cancerous tumor or growth in the hard tissues of your mouth (like your jaw bones, teeth, or tooth sockets) or soft tissues (like your gums, tongue, cheeks, or roof of your mouth). The cancer must be malignant, meaning it's aggressive and can spread to other parts of your body, not just a benign (non-cancerous) growth. This applies to any type of oral or dental cancer regardless of the specific location in your mouth.
