Other specified forms of arthropathy (DC 5009)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Diagnostic Code 5009 covers specific types of arthritis that don't fit into the main arthritis categories, including conditions like Charcot neuropathic arthropathy (joint damage from nerve problems), hypertrophic arthropathy (enlarged joints), crystalline arthropathy (crystal deposits in joints), and autoimmune arthropathies (immune system attacking joints). The VA doesn't rate this code directly - instead, they'll use other diagnostic codes depending on whether you're having an active flare-up or dealing with chronic, long-term symptoms. During flare-ups, they rate under code 5002, while chronic conditions get rated based on specific symptoms like limited range of motion or functional loss.

Rating levels

  • -1% — This code covers specified forms of joint disease that are not assigned their own diagnostic code (excluding gout, which is rated separately under DC 5017). The VA rates these using the criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (DC 5002) under 38 CFR § 4.71a.
