Heterotopic ossification (DC 5023)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Heterotopic ossification is when bone forms in places where it shouldn't be - like in muscles, tendons, or other soft tissues around joints. This unusual bone growth can happen after trauma, surgery, or certain injuries and can severely limit your range of motion. The VA doesn't have specific rating percentages for this code because they evaluate heterotopic ossification by rating the functional loss it causes to your affected joints using the appropriate joint codes.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Heterotopic ossification is the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissue, typically following injury, surgery, or burns. The VA rates it under 38 CFR § 4.71a based on the limitation of motion of the affected joint, using analogous codes; a minimum 10% rating applies with X-ray-confirmed involvement and limitation of motion.
