Anatomical loss of one hand and loss of use of one foot (DC 5104)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This diagnostic code covers the specific combination of losing one complete hand (either through amputation or total loss of function) plus losing the use of one foot (meaning the foot is still there but doesn't work properly). This is a fixed rating situation - the VA doesn't use percentage ranges but assigns a set rating percentage based on this exact combination of losses. You'll need to look at the amputation rating table in 38 CFR § 4.71a to find your specific rating, which will be quite high given the severity of losing both a hand and the use of a foot.

Rating levels

  • 100% — To qualify for this rating, you must have completely lost one hand through amputation or severe injury, AND your foot on the opposite side must be completely unable to function for walking or weight-bearing, even though it's still physically attached to your body. The hand loss means the hand is physically gone, while "loss of use" of the foot means it cannot perform its normal functions due to paralysis, severe pain, or other damage that makes it essentially useless.
