Anatomical loss of both hands (DC 5106)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Diagnostic Code 5106 covers the complete anatomical loss of both hands - meaning both hands have been physically amputated or are completely missing. This is one of the most severe musculoskeletal disabilities the VA rates, carrying a permanent 100% disability rating. The 100% rating reflects that losing both hands creates total occupational and social impairment, making it extremely difficult to perform most work and daily living activities.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You qualify for this rating if you have lost both of your hands completely through amputation or severe injury. The loss must be "anatomical," meaning the actual physical structure of the hand is gone - not just that your hands don't work properly due to nerve damage or other conditions.
