Five digits of one hand, amputation of (DC 5126)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Diagnostic code 5126 covers the amputation (complete loss) of all five fingers on one hand. This is what the VA calls a 'fixed rating' condition, meaning you get a set percentage based on the specific body part lost, not on how much it affects your daily life. The VA rates this condition by looking up the exact rating in their amputation tables found in 38 CFR § 4.71a, and the percentage depends on factors like which hand is affected and whether it's your dominant hand.

Rating levels

  • 70% — If you've lost your all five digits of one hand on your dominant hand, you receive a 70% rating. On the non-dominant hand the same amputation rates at 60%. VA treats the hand you write with as your "major" (dominant) hand; the other is your "minor" (non-dominant) hand, and ratings are 10% lower because loss of function on the non-dominant side is considered less disabling.
  • 60% — If you've lost your all five digits of one hand on your non-dominant hand, you receive a 60% rating. On the dominant hand the same amputation rates at 70%. VA treats the hand you write with as your "major" (dominant) hand; the other is your "minor" (non-dominant) hand, and ratings are 10% lower because loss of function on the non-dominant side is considered less disabling.
