Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This rating covers veterans who have lost part or all of a finger on their hand (not including the thumb, which has its own rating code). The VA gives you either 10% or 20% depending on how much of your finger and hand bone was removed. If you lost more than half of the long bone in your palm (metacarpal bone), you get 20%. If the amputation was just the finger itself without major palm bone loss, you get 10%.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You qualify for this rating if your long (middle) finger was amputated and more than half of the metacarpal bone (the long bone in your hand that connects your wrist to your finger) was also removed during the amputation surgery.
