Little finger, amputation of (DC 5156)

This diagnostic code covers the loss of your little finger, either partially or completely. The VA rates this condition at 20% if more than half of the metacarpal bone (the long bone in your palm that connects to your little finger) was removed along with the finger, or 10% if just the finger was lost without significant metacarpal bone removal. The rating reflects how much the amputation affects your hand's overall function and grip strength.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You qualify for this rating if your little (pinky) finger was amputated and more than half of the metacarpal bone (the long bone in your hand that connects your wrist to your finger) was also removed during the amputation surgery.
  • 20% — You qualify for this rating if your little (pinky) finger was amputated and more than half of the metacarpal bone (the long bone in your hand that connects your wrist to your finger) was also removed during the amputation surgery.
  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if your little (pinky) finger was amputated at or above the middle joint without removal of the hand bone (metacarpal). This includes amputations at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint or higher up toward the hand.
  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if your little (pinky) finger was amputated at or above the middle joint without removal of the hand bone (metacarpal). This includes amputations at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint or higher up toward the hand.
