Complete amputation, lower extremity (DC 5160)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This diagnostic code covers the most severe lower leg amputations - where your entire leg and part of your pelvis have been surgically removed. The VA rates these at either 100% (if pelvic bone was removed) or 90% (if only the thigh bone and hip muscles were removed), both of which are permanent ratings. These ratings reflect the profound impact on your mobility and daily functioning.

Rating levels

  • 100% — This applies when your entire leg and hip have been surgically removed, including the thigh bone (femur), the muscles that attach to your pelvis, and part of your pelvic bones themselves. This is the most extensive type of leg amputation, where the removal goes beyond just the leg and actually involves cutting away portions of your hip and pelvic structure.
  • 90% — This criteria covers the complete surgical removal of the entire thigh bone (femur) along with only the muscles that are naturally part of the pelvis area. The amputation involves taking the leg off at the hip joint where it connects to the pelvis, but removes only the specific muscles that belong to that pelvic region rather than extensive surrounding tissue.
