With defective stump, thigh amputation recommended (DC 5163)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This diagnostic code covers situations where you have a leg amputation below the knee, but the remaining part of your leg (called the stump) has serious problems that make using a prosthetic difficult or impossible. When this happens, the VA may recommend amputating higher up on the thigh instead. This isn't actually a separate rating - it's a note that tells the VA to use the higher amputation rating criteria found in section 4.71a, which would typically result in a higher disability percentage.

Rating levels

  • 60% — Your lower leg amputation has healed poorly, creating problems with the remaining part of your leg (called the stump). The stump has significant issues like poor healing, infection, or other complications that make it difficult or impossible to use a prosthetic leg effectively. These problems are severe enough that doctors recommend removing more of your leg higher up at the thigh level to create a better, more functional amputation site.
