Toes, all, amputation of, without metatarsal loss or transmetatarsal, amputation of, with up to half of metatarsal loss (DC 5170)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This diagnostic code covers the complete amputation of all toes on one foot, whether it's just the toes themselves or includes up to half of the long bones behind them (metatarsals - the bones that run from your arch to your toes). The VA rates this condition at a flat 30% disability rating. This reflects the significant impact on balance, walking, and daily activities that comes with losing all toes on a foot.

Rating levels

  • 30% — This rating covers two situations involving your toes and the front part of your foot. First, it applies if you've had all your toes amputated but the long bones in your foot (metatarsals) are still intact. Second, it covers cases where you've had a transmetatarsal amputation (cutting across the front part of your foot) that removed up to half of those long foot bones along with all your toes.
