Toes, three or four, amputation of, without metatarsal involvement (DC 5173)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This rating covers the amputation of three or four toes at once, but the amputation doesn't go back into the long bones of your foot (the metatarsals). The VA gives you 20% if your big toe is among those amputated, or 10% if your big toe is still intact. The higher rating for losing the big toe makes sense since it's crucial for balance and pushing off when you walk.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You qualify for this rating if you've had three or four toes amputated (surgically removed), and one of those toes must be your big toe. The amputation only involves the toes themselves, not the longer bones in your foot behind the toes (metatarsals).
  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you've had three or four of your toes amputated (surgically removed), but your big toe is still intact and the amputation didn't involve the metatarsals (the long bones in your foot between your ankle and toes). The amputation must be limited to just the toe bones themselves, not extending back into the main part of your foot.
