Five digits of one hand, unfavorable ankylosis of (DC 5216)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This diagnostic code covers unfavorable ankylosis (stiff, fused joints) affecting all five digits of one hand. Ankylosis is unfavorable when the fingers are fused in positions that make it hard to grip or use your hand. The VA rates this at 60% if it is your dominant (major) hand or 50% if it is your non-dominant (minor) hand, recognizing the bigger functional loss when your primary hand is locked up.

Rating levels

  • 60% — Unfavorable ankylosis (fixation in a non-functional position) of all five digits of the dominant hand is rated 60%. On the non-dominant hand it is 50%. Also consider whether evaluation as amputation (DC 5126) is warranted.
  • 50% — Unfavorable ankylosis of all five digits of the non-dominant hand is rated 50%.
