Thigh, limitation of extension of (DC 5251)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This diagnostic code covers conditions that limit how far you can straighten your thigh at the hip joint. The VA rates this at 10% when you can only extend (straighten) your thigh to within 5 degrees of normal - meaning your leg stays slightly bent even when you try to fully straighten it. This limitation can make activities like walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods more difficult.

Rating levels

  • 10% — Your thigh muscle can only straighten your leg to within 5 degrees of being completely straight. This means when you try to fully extend your leg, it stops 5 degrees short of normal full extension (like when your leg would be completely straight while lying down or standing).
