Hip, flail joint (DC 5254)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

A flail joint hip is a severe condition where the hip joint has completely lost its stability and moves abnormally in all directions due to massive bone loss, severe fractures, or destruction of the joint structures. The VA rates this condition at a flat 80% disability rating, recognizing it as a seriously disabling condition that significantly impacts your ability to walk, stand, and perform daily activities. This is one of the highest ratings available for hip conditions, reflecting the severe functional limitations it causes.

Rating levels

  • 80% — A flail joint means your hip joint has lost all stability and moves abnormally in multiple directions because the bones, ligaments, or muscles that normally hold it in place are severely damaged or destroyed. Your hip essentially "flops around" and cannot support your weight or provide normal function, making it extremely difficult or impossible to walk normally or bear weight on that leg.
