Cartilage, semilunar, dislocated, with frequent episodes of "locking," pain, and effusion into the joint (DC 5258)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71aDBQ: DBQ MUSC Knee and lower leg

This code covers a dislocated meniscus (the rubbery cartilage cushions in your knee) that causes your knee to frequently 'lock up,' creates ongoing pain, and leads to swelling from fluid buildup in the joint. The VA rates this specific combination of symptoms at 20% disability. This rating recognizes that while you can still function, you're dealing with regular knee problems that affect your daily activities and mobility.

Rating levels

  • 20% — You have a piece of cartilage in your knee joint (called semilunar cartilage or meniscus) that has moved out of its normal position and regularly causes your knee to get stuck or lock up so you can't bend or straighten it properly. Along with this locking, you experience ongoing pain and swelling in the joint where fluid builds up (effusion).
