Genu recurvatum (DC 5263)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Genu recurvatum is when your knee bends backward beyond its normal range, usually from an injury that damaged the ligaments or muscles that normally keep your knee stable. The VA rates this condition at 10% if it was caused by trauma and creates weakness and instability when you bear weight on that leg. This means the VA recognizes that your knee doesn't provide reliable support when walking, standing, or climbing stairs, which can affect your daily activities and work capacity.

Rating levels

  • 10% — Your knee bends backward beyond its normal range of motion (genu recurvatum) due to an injury or trauma you experienced during military service. The VA must be able to objectively measure and document that this backward bending causes weakness in your knee and makes you feel unsteady or insecure when putting weight on that leg while standing or walking.
