Subastragalar or tarsal joint, ankylosis of (DC 5272)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

This code covers ankylosis (complete fusion and loss of motion) in your subastragalar or other tarsal joints in your foot. These are the joints in your midfoot and hindfoot that help with side-to-side movement and walking on uneven surfaces. The VA rates this at 20% if the fusion happened in a poor weight-bearing position that affects your ability to walk normally, or 10% if the fusion occurred in a good position that still allows relatively normal walking.

Rating levels

  • 20% — Your subastragalar or tarsal joint (the joints in your foot below your ankle bone) has become completely fused or locked in place, and this fusion occurred in a position that makes it difficult to bear weight properly on that foot. The poor positioning of the fused joint causes problems with your ability to stand, walk, or put normal weight on your foot during daily activities.
  • 10% — Your ankle joint below the main ankle bone (subastragalar) or the small joints in your midfoot (tarsal joints) are completely fused together and cannot move, but your foot is locked in a good position that allows you to bear weight normally when standing and walking. The fused joint doesn't cause significant problems with your ability to support your body weight or maintain balance.
