Coccyx, removal of (DC 5298)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71aDBQ: DBQ MUSC Bones and Other Skeletal Conditions

This diagnostic code covers veterans who have had their coccyx (tailbone) surgically removed, either partially or completely. The VA rates this condition based on whether you still experience painful residuals (ongoing pain or discomfort) after the surgery. You'll receive a 10% rating if you have painful residuals from the removal, or 0% if you don't have ongoing pain but the VA still acknowledges the surgery occurred.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You qualify if you've had part or all of your tailbone (coccyx) surgically removed and you still experience ongoing pain in that area. The pain must be a leftover effect from the surgery that continues to bother you. Whether you had just a portion removed or the entire tailbone removed doesn't matter - what counts is that you have persistent pain where the surgery was done.
  • 0% — You had your tailbone surgically removed and the area has healed completely without any ongoing pain or discomfort. You can sit, stand, and move around normally without any problems or limitations from where the surgery was done.
