Nose, loss of part of, or scars (DC 6504)

Body system: Respiratory SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.97

This rating covers situations where you've lost part of your nose or have significant scarring from an injury or medical condition. The VA gives you a 30% rating if the damage is severe enough that both nasal passages are visible from the outside, or 10% if you've lost part of one ala (the fleshy part of your nostril) or have other obvious disfigurement. These ratings focus on the visible cosmetic impact rather than breathing problems, which would be rated separately.

Rating levels

  • 30% — You would qualify for this rating if you've lost part of your nose or have scars that expose both of your nasal passages (the openings inside your nostrils that allow air to flow through). This means the damage is significant enough that both sides of your nasal cavity are visible from the outside due to missing tissue or scarring.
  • 10% — If you're missing part of one of the wings of your nose (the curved parts on either side of your nostrils called "ala"), or if you have obvious scars or disfigurement on your nose that clearly changes how it looks, you would qualify for this rating. The key is that the damage to your nose must be noticeable and obvious to others when they look at you.
