Bacterial rhinitis (DC 6523)

Body system: Respiratory SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.97

Bacterial rhinitis is a bacterial infection of your nasal passages that causes long-term inflammation and swelling. The VA rates this condition at either 10% or 50% depending on severity. A 10% rating applies when you have permanent swelling of the turbinates (the curved bones in your nose that help filter air) and significant nasal blockage. A 50% rating is reserved specifically for rhinoscleroma, which is a rare but serious chronic bacterial infection.

Rating levels

  • 50% — You have rhinoscleroma, which is a chronic bacterial infection that causes thick, crusty growths and nodules (bumps) inside your nose and nasal passages. This infection causes significant ongoing inflammation, makes breathing through your nose difficult, and can lead to deformity of your nose structure if untreated.
  • 10% — Your nasal passages must be severely blocked due to permanently swollen tissue inside your nose called turbinates (the structures that help filter and humidify air). You need to have either more than half of both nostrils blocked, or one nostril completely blocked, and this blockage must be permanent rather than temporary.
