Hyperthyroid heart disease (DC 7008)

Body system: Cardiovascular SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.104

Hyperthyroid heart disease covers the cardiovascular complications of an overactive thyroid (Graves disease, toxic multinodular goiter, toxic adenoma, etc.). DC 7008 does not assign a rating on its own. Instead, the VA rates the specific cardiac manifestation under whichever cardiovascular diagnostic code applies: atrial fibrillation / atrial flutter / sinus tachycardia under DC 7010; cardiomyopathy under DC 7020; heart failure under the General Rating Formula for Diseases of the Heart (DCs 7000-7007 family). The underlying hyperthyroidism itself is rated SEPARATELY under DC 7900 (Hyperthyroidism) in the endocrine schedule. Multiple ratings are combined under 38 CFR § 4.25.
