Special Monthly Compensation
SMC Back Pay Calculator
Did VA grant SMC or SMC-K with an effective date in the past? Enter what VA paid you before, what it awarded, and the dates on your decision letter. See the back pay owed month by month, at the rates VA paid in each year.

Back pay by rate year
Rates change every December 1 with the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), so each row is one rate year.

How this calculator works
Back pay is the difference between what VA paid you and what your new award pays, for each month from your effective date until VA started paying the new rate. This calculator works that out one month at a time.
- First month: VA pays from the first day of the month after the effective date (38 CFR 3.31), so the effective month itself is not owed.
- Last month: VA pays each month on the first of the next. Back pay stops the month before the decision month, because later months arrive at the new rate.
- Rates: each month uses the rates VA paid that month. Rates change every December 1, so a December uses the next year's table.
- Dependents: added at 30 percent or higher and on every SMC level, using VA's published amounts for that year.
- SMC-K: each award adds the SMC-K rate. VA does not add SMC-K to SMC-O / P or SMC-R, and SMC-L through N½ plus SMC-K cannot pass the SMC-O rate (38 CFR 3.350(a)).
Where the rates come from
Every rate from December 2013 to November 2026 comes from VA's own rate tables and was checked against the cost-of-living notices VA publishes in the Federal Register, which list the amounts in 38 U.S.C. 1114 and 1115. Where VA's tables disagree with themselves by a dollar or less, this calculator follows the amounts VA's own rules produce.
What it does not include
- Effective dates before November 2013. Use the amounts in your VA letter.
- Changes during the period, such as a new dependent or a second rating change. Use the end date to split the period into parts.
- Amounts VA can hold back, such as a military retired pay waiver, severance or separation pay recoupment, drill pay, a reduction during a long hospital stay, or a past overpayment.
