Typhoid arthritis is joint inflammation caused by typhoid fever, a bacterial infection that was more common in earlier military service eras. This is a cross-reference code that doesn't have its own rating criteria - the VA will rate your arthritis symptoms using the standard arthritis codes (5003 or 5010-5012) based on which joints are affected. Your rating will depend on how limited your joint movement is and how much pain affects your daily activities.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Typhoid arthritis is joint inflammation caused by Salmonella typhi infection. The VA rates the active disease as for active rheumatic fever and any chronic residuals using the criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (DC 5002) under 38 CFR § 4.71a.
