Anatomical loss of one foot and loss of use of one hand (DC 5105)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Diagnostic Code 5105 covers the specific situation where you've lost one foot (either through amputation or it's completely non-functional) AND lost the use of one hand (meaning your hand can't perform its basic functions, even if it's still physically there). This is a fixed rating code, meaning the VA assigns a set percentage based on this exact combination of losses. The rating reflects the significant impact on your ability to work and perform daily activities when you can't use both a foot and a hand.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You must have completely lost one foot through amputation or other means, and your hand on the opposite or same side must be completely unusable even if it's still physically attached. The hand doesn't need to be amputated, but it must have no functional ability whatsoever - meaning you cannot grip, grasp, or use it for any meaningful tasks.
