VA Disability Rating for Arm, amputation of, above insertion of deltoid (DC 5121)

DC 5121 covers amputation of the arm above the insertion of the deltoid muscle (near the shoulder). The VA rates it at 90% on the dominant (major) side and 80% on the non-dominant (minor) side under 38 CFR 4.71a. This is an amputation code; loss of use of the hand without amputation is rated under DC 5125.

Rating levels

  • 90% — Amputation of the arm above the deltoid insertion (high above-elbow amputation) is rated 90% on the dominant side and 80% on the non-dominant side per 38 CFR §4.71a.
  • 80% — Amputation of the arm above the deltoid insertion (high above-elbow amputation) is rated 90% on the dominant side and 80% on the non-dominant side per 38 CFR §4.71a.
