Hand, loss of use of (DC 5125)

Diagnostic Code 5125 covers situations where you've completely lost the use of your hand, even though the hand is still physically there. This is different from an actual amputation - your hand remains attached but functions as if it's gone due to severe nerve damage, muscle damage, or other conditions. The VA rates this the same as if your hand was actually amputated, with the specific rating percentage determined by which hand is affected and found in the amputation rating schedule.

Rating levels

  • 70% — Loss of use of the hand (function equivalent to amputation) is rated 70% on the dominant side and 60% on the non-dominant side per 38 CFR §4.71a.
  • 60% — Loss of use of the hand (function equivalent to amputation) is rated 70% on the dominant side and 60% on the non-dominant side per 38 CFR §4.71a.
