Middle or lower thirds (DC 5162)

Body system: Musculoskeletal SystemRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.71a

Diagnostic Code 5162 covers amputations or complete loss of use in the middle or lower thirds of certain body parts, typically fingers or limbs. This is a fixed rating code, meaning the VA assigns a set percentage based on exactly which body part is affected and where the amputation or loss occurs. You'll need to look at the specific amputation tables in 38 CFR § 4.71a to find your exact rating percentage, which can range from minor ratings for finger portions to much higher ratings for major limb loss.

Rating levels

  • 60% — The fracture or injury is located in the middle portion or lower portion of the bone, rather than at the top end near a joint. This refers to breaks that occur along the main shaft of the bone or toward the bottom third of the bone's length, which typically heal differently than fractures near the ends where bones connect to joints.
