VA Disability Rating for Amputation not improvable by prosthesis controlled by natural knee action (DC 5164)

DC 5164 covers amputation of the leg (below the knee) that cannot be improved by a prosthesis controlled by natural knee action. The VA rates it at 60% under 38 CFR 4.71a. A below-knee amputation that does permit a prosthesis is rated 40% under DC 5165.

Rating levels

  • 60% — This rating applies when you have a leg amputation where a prosthetic (artificial leg) cannot be fitted with knee controls that work with your natural knee movement. The amputation level or your remaining limb makes it impossible to use modern prosthetics that would normally bend and move like a natural knee joint, significantly limiting your mobility and function.
