VA Disability Rating for At a lower level, permitting prosthesis (DC 5165)

DC 5165 covers amputation of the leg at a lower level that permits a prosthesis. The VA rates it at a single level of 40% under 38 CFR 4.71a. A leg amputation that cannot be improved by a prosthesis is rated 60% under DC 5164.

Rating levels

  • 40% — An amputation of the leg below the knee, where the remaining limb is long enough and in good enough condition to support and use an artificial limb (prosthesis). The cut must leave sufficient healthy bone and tissue so that a prosthetic device can be properly fitted and functionally used for daily activities.
