Vibriosis (DC 6300)

Body system: Infectious Diseases, Immune Disorders, and Nutritional DeficienciesRegulation: 38 CFR § 4.88b

Vibriosis is an infection caused by Vibrio bacteria found in contaminated water or food, with cholera being the most severe form. The VA rates this condition under the General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases (38 CFR § 4.88b): 100% during the active phase of disease (acute infection requiring treatment), then 0% under DC 6300 once the active disease has resolved. Any lasting damage from the infection (residuals) is rated SEPARATELY under whichever body-system code best matches the deficit, gastrointestinal codes for chronic diarrhea or malabsorption, renal codes for kidney damage from dehydration, neurologic codes for neuropathy, and so on, then combined under § 4.25.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You qualify for 100% during the active phase of vibriosis (cholera or non-cholera Vibrio infection), the period when the infection is causing acute symptoms (severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, etc.) and requires active treatment. Once the acute infection resolves the 100% rating ends, the rating drops to 0% under DC 6300 and any lasting damage is rated separately under the relevant body system (gastrointestinal, renal, neurologic, etc.).
  • 0% — After the active phase of vibriosis has resolved, DC 6300 itself rates at 0%. Any lasting damage (residuals) is NOT rated under DC 6300, instead it is rated under whichever body-system code best captures the damage: GI codes for chronic diarrhea, malabsorption, or post-infectious irritable bowel; renal codes for kidney damage from severe dehydration; neurologic codes for any neuropathy or seizure residuals; etc. Per 38 CFR § 4.88b General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases.
