Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can develop after a strep throat infection, potentially affecting your heart, joints, brain, and other organs. The VA rates this condition from 0% to 100% based on whether the disease is currently active and what symptoms you're experiencing. Higher ratings go to veterans with active disease or those dealing with ongoing complications like heart problems, neurological issues, or severe digestive symptoms that significantly impact daily life.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can follow strep throat and damage the heart valves, joints, skin, and brain. The VA rates whatever residuals remain — most commonly rheumatic heart disease (DC 7000), inflammatory arthritis, or neurological effects (Sydenham chorea) — under 38 CFR § 4.88b.
