Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria called treponema. The VA rates syphilis based on how active the disease is and what symptoms you're experiencing, ranging from 0% for no symptoms to 100% for active disease. Your rating depends on specific combinations of symptoms like skin problems, nerve damage, digestive issues, and mental symptoms - the more severe and numerous your symptoms, the higher your rating.

Rating levels

  • -1% — Syphilis (and related treponema infections such as yaws, pinta, and bejel) is a bacterial infection that can affect almost any body system, especially in late stages. The VA rates whatever residuals remain — neurological (under DC 8013–8015), cardiovascular, ocular, or cutaneous — under 38 CFR § 4.88b.
